Vul: fox
Rai Patience Cantor: Indeed.
Perra: yar
Rai Patience Cantor: How is the things and also stuff?
Perra: Good
Rai Patience Cantor: Good to hear.
Perra: When I was out and about yesterday I saw my co-workers staring at the sun and was super confused until I remembered there was an eclepise happening.
Rai Patience Cantor: Did you warn them that staring at the sun, even during an eclipse, is a terrible idea?
Perra: They had those glasses that let you do that, but no I was across the parking lot so really couldn't say any thing.
Rai Patience Cantor: Distance is an acceptable excuse.
Vul: I watched GOOD NIGHT WORLD, which was okay-ish
Rai Patience Cantor: Started actually playing Cyberpunk with Phantom Liberty etc. It is genuinely startling at how different the game plays now, and I'm having to get used to not being a cybergod that destroys the works of man with stray thoughts. Have to mix it up a little now.
Vul: vexations of a shut-in vampire princess is pretty funny
Vul: thusfar
Rai Patience Cantor: Honestly, I feel like quickhacks have been nerfed to about where they should be. They're totally viable, and in fact very helpful in combat, but I'm not longer firing off a single Contagion and wiping out the entire building.
Rai Patience Cantor: Oh, really? I didn't have high expectations for that one. I'm in Love with the Villainess continues to be hilarious, at least to me.
Rai Patience Cantor: But I'm not really following any of the other new shows. I'm not even sure which ones exist.
Ganaroth: If that vampire show continues to be good, maybe I'll take a look. Gotta feed the beast somehow.
Ganaroth: So, I expect we all know why we're here. For the sake of continuity, and me not making any weird statements that rewrite reality, can you tell me what you remember of where we left off?
=^v^=: (( we were going to THE NOOK ))
Vul was a bird, probably a small hawk of some sort this time
Ganaroth: ((Okay, I know that took a while, but I wanted to really refamiliarize myself with where I was mentally.))
vonel: (( not a problem ))
Over the wall you go. Normally there would be vigilant guards peering from the gatehouse towers, ready to catch any such brazen attempt, but unfortunately they're all downstairs, making sure that they have numerical parity with the corsairs. You hear the shouting grow more strident and hostile shortly after you touch the ground again, and can hear Kaylen shouting back, with a note of real fear in her voice, as she tries to press through the mob. On this side of the wall is a fantastical garden, covered with shimmering and iridescent flora from all across the column, sculpted and magically twisted into living works of art. More importantly, there is cover here, at least from anyone on your level. The Ruby Palace itself rears up behind, a spray of slender towers, connected to each other at apparently random places by arcing interior bridges. The building itself seems to be constructed, at least on the outside, of some kind of translucent red stone. Not actually ruby; it's easy enough to tell the difference when you get close, but still otherworldly, ostentatious, and undoubtedly impressive.
Perra: "Hope she get's though okay."
Although you're unlikely ot be spotted by others walking the gardens, you'd be in clear view of anyone watching from the towers themselves. Though if they didn't witness your flight over the walls, you'd be anonnymous rasuls to them.
=^v^=: (( we still in the air or did we land? ))
Kaylen: ((I am assuming you landed, but if not you should tell me.))
Perra landed.
Vul turned back to normal Vul at landing, though in his new fancy robe disguise
vonel: (( either on her own or by landing on her face, yay flight limits. ))
=^v^=: (( stupid tyrany of gravity ))
Vul: "She shoud be fine, after all this is sorta her element, right?" Vul tries to reassure but is obviusly distracted by the plants and the like
Perra: "Yeah..."
After several tense minutes, Kaylen stumbles into view, a look of real outrage on her face. "The actual fuck." She gestures to the arm of her robe, which is now halfway to falling off, the stitches badly torn. "Okay, so I set this up, karma, I get it. But as far as they know, I'm just a fucking messenger. That lord actually tried to grab me up, and now my robe looks like this." She sighs. "Oh well. If anyone asks, I can just tell them the truth, more or less." She tries to find a way to disguise the tear, but it isn't happening. Eventually she gives up. "They are furious. I'm starting to worry that I ACTUALLY started a war."
Vul: o.o "Are you alright?"
Kaylen sighs heavily. "Yes, I'm fine, thanks. I just had to twist out of the grip of some people who really didn't want me going to work, I guess. I'm not hurt. And even if I was, I'm a toughie. A few bruises aren't going to slow me down."
Perra looks noticeable uncomfortable as Kaylen tells them what happened, "Sorry..."
Kaylen: "Hey, this is in no way your fault, okay? Your dad being here is just bad luck. You aren't responsible for his behavior."
Kaylen: "Besides, they were just trying to detain me or whatever. Nothing worse."
Vul perks up a bit, "If it does start to hurt, Perra can put her hand on it a bit to help the swelling?"
Perra nods, "Right sorry. I know it's not my fault but he's still family and that's what you do right?"
Kaylen: "That cold is pretty nice, can't lie. Yeah. I get the embarrassment of having family. Some of them are happy for me. Then there are all of the ones who think I betrayed them by getting out of Fisheries, and the ones who show up at the observatory looking for free... I don't know. It's like because I live in the Brass Quarter now, that means I automatically have money? I'm basically a servant. I'd be making more actual money if I'd stayed home." She seems to suddenly realize that she's been ranting a bit. "Ok, sorry. That got away from me. Point is... yeah, family is complicated, and we never really get away."
Vul tilts his head, "Huh... I guess I did go after Ra'ven too..."
Kaylen: "Look, for all I know, he might be a perfectly nice guy. I provoked him pretty hard, so really... Okay, now I'm apologizing to you. Dammit." She nods. "Of course you did. I mean... honestly, I feel like that what you did should just be the expected response."
Vul: "Well, Ra'ven didn't expect it, and to be honest, I didn't really consider any of my sisters might actually come after me?"
Vul frowns, "Sorta worrid now..."
Kaylen: "My second little brother is a total piece of shit, but I'd break him out of prison if I had to. Family doesn't get to assume you'll just let them go twist in the wind."
Vul nods, "Speaking of prision, we probably should get moving? Not sure how problematic standing around is."
Perra: "Hmmm... If father sees me he'll make sure he's dragging me back with him when he leaves."
Perra nods at Vul.
Kaylen: "We're disguised pretty well, but yeah, we should be moving." She gestures towards the correct side of the palace. "Let's go interrupt a couple of guards and make them really embarrassed."
Perra heads in the deriction Kay pointed.
=^v^=: (( dang, missed chance to ask her if she was Okay ))
=^v^=: (( Her, "No just regular Kay" ))
you can hear them well before you see them. They're obviously trying to be quiet, but the alchohol has made that effort less than effective. Their laughter, and the occasional sound of their romp makes it obvious that the guards are doing something, but not their job.
Kaylen: "You know, I wish this kind of thing happened more at the observatory. What a morale booster..."
Fallen pops his head out of one of the sculpted flowering topiaries nearby. "Oh hi, you made it! Don't worry, the show just got started, so it's still safe for kids. Might want to hurry on it, though."
Fallen frowns at Perra. "You look unhappy."
Perra: "Oh... just ran in to someone I wasn't expecting."
Vul: "Supose that's too bad for that place..." Vul symphasizes with Kay
Fallen: "Well, I do that all day, but I basically never look like that. Sound like this person's got a thorn in you, but this probably isn't the moment to dig it out. Though this place probably does have tools for digging out a thorn. Some of these plants are right wicked up close! But that's being literal, and unhelpful. So, uh, one of you good-talking-people, go and do your thing, yeah? I'm a not great talk person, when it comes down to it, so I'd probably just end up thumping them in the end."
Fallen: "An' honestly, I never feel right when I thump a person that actually belongs where they are. It's like being a criminal, and I don't truck with that sort, no sirree."
Vul makes vague questioning gesure at the situation they are in
Vul: "You have this, right Perra?"
Perra: -.- "Oh... uh I guess."
Fallen: "Wha?" He looks over toward where you're gesturing, trying to see something. "Uh... are you saying a monster's about to attack them? Or are you asking what they're doing? Wow, I'm not good at charades like this. Uh, well, those two are drunk and making out something fierce. There's gotta be at least five pieces of armor on the ground by now, and eventually this is going to stop being a daylight show. You decide how memorable you want their day to be, righty?"
Fallen: "It's a little sad, you know. I wanna encourage young love, but they're really being irresponsible about it. Shameful."
=^v^=: (( good old doing crimes ))
Fallen: ((Fallen very much dislikes criminal activity. Laws are extremely important for people to feel safe and happy. That's why he volunteers his time and effort in aiding the city in getting rid of criminals.))
=^v^=: (( Vul has learned his lesson about criminal trespassing being a thing ))
Fallen: ((It rarely seems to occur to him that almost everything he does is probably some kind of criminal activity.))
Perra looks like she doesn't have any idea what she's supposed to say, "I just have to ask them if we can go in right?"
Fallen: (( Trespass best pass.))
Vul: "Oh no, don't ask, just pretend to be all shocked and embarassed and be all, 'We are just going to go then' or something."
Fallen: "Yeah!" He snickers a bit. "We'd usually have to show our mark to go inside, but I'll bet eleventy-thousand crescents that they just wave us in as quick as possible."
Perra turns to Vul, "Why don't you go talk to them then?"
Fallen: "Wha? Albi, you got 'thority! You're like twice as tall as anyone else here, and look like you could snap us in half. Me or you, which one is going to scare them more? Instinct, like."
Vul: "I can if you want..."
Fallen: "Well, s'probably ok. Not really a big deal who ruins the mood."
Vul gives a little sigh then forges ahead!
As predicted, a terrified pause signals the couple's sudden awareness of your presence. Both of them scramble to their feet, desperately grasping at hanging bits of metal and leather that had been previously discarded. The woman seems to be a little calmer than her counterpart, and calls out in her best attempt at pretending that everything is normal. "The Ruby Palace... The palace... It asks your porpoise." The man is still trying to strap armor back on.
Vul gives a somewhat dramatic "Ach!" folloed by, "Um... don't you usually have lookouts for this sorta thing?"
Embarrassed Guard: "Umm..." She grows a bit red in the face. "...Not usually... could you maybeee... Not tell? Look, we're always too busy, and is a tough job, right? You understand. Always messages you neeed to take, and stuff. They never treat you folks right neither."
Mortified Guard: "Lookout... I mean, but who could we get to...."
Vul nods, "We were just trying to avoid that rather unplesent mess at the front... they even tried to stop my friend..." gesutres at Kay's robe.
Kaylen: "Can you believe this? Ugh. Saltwater barbarians." She rolls her eyes.
Embarrassed Guard: "Oohh... yeah, the Corfins. I'm glad I'm not on gatehouse for another few hours. Maybe they'll... calmer, by then."
Vul nods, "Might um... hurry up though... they might pull more people off shift...." He also sorta points to the passage into the main, "... err... can we go? We do have things to delever a bit urgently..."
Mortified Guard: "Bastards. Come to our city, think they can bang on all the doors." He gets up, nodding quickly at Vul. "Right, right. Uh, if you were quiet about this, we'd owe youuu." He fumbles at his belt for a bit, extricating a large key, which then performs its task. He holds the door open for you, although it would be just as accurate to say that he was leaning on it for support.
Embarrassed Guard: "Ah, shit." She seems to notice the scroll you're carrying. "Fuckit, please don't tell anyone we slowed this delivery down." She seems to be rapidly sobering up.
Vul gives a little indignat huff, "As if we would rat out our brave protectors and fellows in overwork"
Vul gestures for the rest of them to hurry on
Perra hurrys
Embarrassed Guard sighs in relief. "Oh, thanks upon the wolf. And If we can repay the favor, just say so, comrades."
=^v^=: (( the eternal problem: too busy with spy shit to build communism ))
Fallen: "Hehehe... They were real worried. Probably about us ratting on them, and then them being executed for derelictionin of duty. I should probably leave a trail in a different spot on the way out, make it seem like it wasn't their fault. Nice kids."
Fallen: "Righties then. Which reading room are we detectiving first? I'd offer to split up and search on my own, but to be totally honest, I'm not entirely clear on what we're doing! What are we looking for, again?"
Kaylen: "Classic."
Vul: "I mean, the thing we are most looking for is evidence that the Emir actually tell the professor to say that sort of thing, or stuff about why..."
Perra: "The one that had the smaller one attached to it."
Perra: "If your going to have papers like that just sitting around some were, your going to have them in the smaller probably hidden room."
Vul nods, "We probably should split up after that one, since it's most likely and we'd wanna search it fastest..."
Fallen: "Oh, okay. So, maybe personal letters? I mean, I don't know, if I was going to have my motives for antagonizing half the world down on paper, it wouldn't be on an official document. But that's me, and I don't really have any official documents for myself, so it's sort of automatic in that way." He nods. "Yeah, ok, makes sense. This way, fellow rasuls! The eleventh tower reading room awaits!" He begins sauntering down the hall, smiling broadly.
Vul scurrys after
Perra follows as well.
The infiltration seems almost absurdly easy. The residence of possibly the richest person in the world, and the biggest obstacle so far has been a pair of drunken, amorous guards. The Ruby Palace should be bristling with wards and defenses, but here you are, skipping through its passages as though you had every right to be there. You genuinely don't sense any danger here... and it's obvious that this shouldn't be the case. Fallen simply marches you up to the room, and solemnly nods. "And here we arrive, only to find the room locked! Oh, a tragedy! Except that your good friend and neighbor happens to be THE best lockpickeryier in the city." He stands in front of the door, a baroque confection of precious metals inlaid on unyielding steel, rubs his hands together over the lock, and then takes a matching key out of his pocket, which he uses to unlock the door. "Taaaa daaaaa! Greatest lockpickeryier of all time."
Kaylen shoves her way past. "This is starting to feel eerie. Let's search this fast."
Vul: "We in the right ruby palce right? There isn't a decoy?"
Perra: "Yeah... even my house was never this empty. Even when we were gone there was still staff and guards all over."
Vul: "Also I think my sister would object to that claim on lockpicks"
Fallen: "Nah, your sister is good people. She'd appreciate my incredible skills."
Kaylen: "I've been observing the magic laid into the stone here since we got inside. It's full of all the wards and traps you'd expect. All of them turned off. The defenses are just sleeping." She seems absolutely bewildered. "That's not only weird, it's HARD. Convincing guardian magic like this to just not work? I came prepared to try to fool it in a hundred different ways. I wasn't prepared for it to just be snoring." Inside the room is row after row of books, all straight lines conforming to the shelves behind them, with a few choice sample arrayed out on stands. The large central desk is filled with documents, but Kaylen marches over to the far wall, closing her eyes and feeling about. "Ok. Yeah, Perra, Vul, can you feel this? You've both got some ability to sense arcane energies. This is weird, and I want your take."
Perra goes over and takes a look.
Vul:
  : Rolled 13. Arcana
Perra:
  : Rolled 12. Arcana
Vul continues the luckstreak from thursday
vonel: (( the ones... ))
=^v^=: (( at least skill checks don't auto fail, also lol ))
vonel: (( right? ))
=^v^=: (( CLEARLY the wards rolled a 1 on their "Be active" check ))
=^v^=: (( 81 ))
vonel: (( hey only one under 10 ))
vonel: (( err 2 ))
=^v^=: (( 2, there was a 2 and a 7 ))
=^v^=: (( too bad: that reroll wouldda been a 29 ))
Kaylen: ((Kinda amazing. Luckily you're not under pressure, and you have ample time and space to feel what Kaylen is pointing to.))
At the far end of the room, at the apparent hidden entrance to the smaller chamber, is a dense nexus of hostile magic. It seems unlikely that you would have found it on your own, but Kaylen guides you towards it. It feels like the sharp edges of a set of fangs, ready to snap shut on anyone who would dare to open the door, like dozens of knives waiting to to fall upon any intruders... but there are no intruders. The spell is sure of it. There cannot be any intruders here. It's simply impossible.
Perra: "I... I think someone wanted this..."
Vul: "... how the heck?"
Vul: "How do you convince magic something is impossible?"
Kaylen: "Yeah. I'm feeling a little too welcome here, if you get what I'm saying." She looks back at the main door, a worried expression on her face. "If this is a spider web, we're pretty deep inside it. We could try to run for it..."
Perra: "So our choice is be used or leave... so whos using us and for what end?"
Vul hmms
Kaylen: "I have no idea. I have no idea how they could possible have known we were coming at all! I sure as hell didn't tell anyone, other than Fallen. And I don't think that he went blabbing."
Vul: "Oh, it's probably that 'make the Emir look bad' thing again."
Vul: "And the thing is, nobody needed to know 'we' were coming"
Kaylen: "....they just knew that someone would."
Vul: "Just that if you left the door sutibly ajar, would peek"
Vul: "Ya, exactly."
Vul hmms
Vul: "Hey, do you have wait to like... record this trap?"
Vul: "All the doors being basically unbarred is pretty big evidence of but how would you collect it?"
=^v^=: (( a way, not wait ))
Kaylen: "So, are we enterprising, or dupes? Hard to tell..." She frowns "A way to record the trap? Um... It's complicated, but I could repurpose this aetherium..." She produces something along the lines of a large pocketwatch, but with a large quartz lens in the middle. "I helped make this to take... well, recordings, I suppose, but it's a lot more... ok, not now. It's supposed to be for storing ethereal patterns. Hugely complicated systems that need to be scaled down to observe properly. It's not really meant for refined magical constructs like these, but it could... keep it alive? That's the best way I can put it. It's just be that pattern again, but smaller. For as long as it lasts. Like I said, it's not really for this exact.... ugh, whatever." She closes her eyes, clearly concentrating, and a kind of swirling particulate mist appears within the lens, braiding over itself in countless fractal strands, all in perpetual motion. "Ok, This had better be worth it, because I had to erase about three months of feature observations to fit this fucker inside."
Vul: "I mean I'm not really in on the politics around here but isn't this basically damning evidence that is activly saboutaguing this place?'
Kaylen: "Unless we're entertaining the idea that the Emir himself wants us going through his underwear drawer, I think that's a fair assessment."
Perra: "Right, so opening te door then?"
Vul: "I mean, it looks like it was made safe?"
Kaylen: "Go for it. It would absolutely destroy you if it could tell you were here, but it's like the whole thing is off dreaming."
Vul goes up to the door, and bravely opens it
Perra: "That's not reasuring."
The door opens without issue. On the other side is a smaller room, lit by a trio of bright sparks hanging in the air. The walls are covered in scrolls and folios and letters, sometimes in rows, sometimes in stacks, sometimes in piles. Among them are a great number of shabby, hand-bound volumes, marked with dates in a slashing hand upon the covers.
Vul lets out his breath he was holding in relief
Fallen: "Ooooooh, not dead after all! And we found where the Emir keeps his love letters!"
Vul: "I mean unless all of us died at the same time instantly and this is what happens then?"
Vul: "It's a pretty scary trap."
Fallen: "It is?"
Perra slips in to the room and starts looking over the various documents.
Kaylen: "It's like standing under a thousand-ton block of iron that's being balanced in place with a piece of balsa wood. If this thing wakes up for a bare moment and realizes that we're intruding..."
Vul: "Or like a pen of literally every thing with sharp teeth someone could find all just... staring forwards."
Many of the documents seem to be of a personal nature... correspondence with actual friends, and with a number of illegitimate children. There are also huge numbers of diary entries which contain everything from complex intellectual musings on the nature of rulership to a ranked list of berry jams. However, your attention is quickly drawn to a tightly bound stack of letters written on tough parchment, the kind designed to be carried in the open for perhaps months without falling apart or allowing the ink to fade. Each folded letter is marked, not with a wax seal, but with a brand, depicting a nine pointed star, the wavering spokes of which end in the heads of fanged serpents.
Vul copys the berry jam thing for later
Fallen: ((The list looks well thought-out. This could be reliable info.))
Perra: "Ominous seal/brand is ominous..."
=^v^=: (( both Vul and Ra'ven have sweet teeth especally towards berries or honey ))
Fallen: "Total honesty, I'm just extremely jealous that somebody already reserved that symbol. I didn't even know I wanted a symbol before now."
Vul: "Ya, they are really useful for letting people outside of the know in..."
Kaylen bites her lip. "Ok, suspicious. I don't recognize the symbol, but it doesn't look nice. Open one up."
=^v^=: (( perhaps ironic as none of Vul's non-uniform gear has any ))
Perra nods picking one and opening it.
Vul: "Er, be careful?"
Perra: "If everything else here is tuned off/sleeping then it would be odd if a trap on these was still awake."
Vul: "Well, it's someone elses seal, so maybe they did their own wards?"
The letter opens, and while nothing terrible occurs, you immediately feel a powerful sense of *weight,* as if the words on the page are solid, and everything else an illusion. The stolid, harsh lines of infernal script stands out on the page, punctuated in places with another language, like jagged lightning rending the pages apart.
Perra squints her eyes as she looks away, "Kind of hurts to look at... also can't read it."
=^v^=: (( infernal it's own script? ))
Kaylen: "I think we should seriously consider grabbing these and running. They're suspicious as hell, and this whole situation is intensely unsettling."
Kaylen: ((Yes, Infernal has its own script.))
Kaylen: ((A lot of the vocabularly is similar to Supernal, but the grammar is divergent, and the writing is entirely different.))
Vul: "I mean, ya, you probably have a scholer of whatever laungages around right?"
Kaylen: "I'm sure we can find one. And the best part about them is that they won't be here inside this obvious trap."
Perra rolls the scroll back up and packs it away along with the rest of them.
vonel: (( Eileen can do Supernal funnly enough. ))
=^v^=: (( Ra'ven probably can read infernal given why she knows supernal ))
=^v^=: (( I'm pretty sure Vul doesn't know she can though ))
Kaylen: ((I'm sure it won't be that difficult to find a translator of one kind or another.))
Kaylen: ((So, serious question: Do you want to at this point just hit the exfiltrate button and say that you get the hell out of dodge? You can stay and do stuff if you'd like, but if you want to leave, the effort is trivial. Whatever is letting you walk right in seems to have no problem letting you walk right back out too.))
=^v^=: (( ya, we can magic rope out of here ))
vonel: (( Perra's got no other reason to snoop around. ))
Kaylen: ((Rope deployed. Ok, when people get back together, you can discover what this is all about.))
=^v^=: (( for what it's worth Vul'd probably have him and Perra carry Kay over the wall, given it's not being watched this time and she got in trouble going through ))
vonel is disconnected.
