Ganaroth: Looks like the button is working.
Ganaroth: How are you all doing, btw?
Ganaroth: ...Kay, don't respond all at once, folks.
Riot: Doing alright, you?
Ganaroth: Better! My sister rolled into town during the week, and that's always (not sarcastically) fun, so that was nice. Gonna see her on tuesday too.
Riot: Very nice
Ganaroth: She lives off in Alabama, for work/research reasons, so I don't get to see her very often.
Ganaroth: It's nice to catch up.
Riot: Oh boy
Ganaroth: It's one of those things. She's almost got tenure now, so moving to a different school is not really a workable solution. And besides, Auburn is an excellent Vet research school, so she's having a blast regardless.
Riot: Ah nice
Ganaroth: She gets to troll all of the Alabamers.
Riot: As long as you don't have to hear WAR EAGLE every five seconds lol
Ganaroth: Lol, nope. She's as blue as they come, and uses the opportunity to make all of the native's lives frustrating.
Ganaroth: Anyway!

Last time on D&D, plans were made for your visit to the Emir, involving splitting the available operatives into different groups. Those that were at the docks will meet with the Emir, as requested, while the others take up position nearbye, ready to aid the first team if and when needed.

The silvery light of Argent casts the surrounding in shades of gray, black, and luminescent white, colored only by the faint blue-green radiance of the iron wards on most of the buildings you pass. As always during Argent, a sharp and bitter taste lingers on the air, like burnt herbs or old silver, but despite the pale radiance of this cycle you see no amok fey as you pass through the streets. Three times during the walk, you hear the song of narrow blades and fletched arrows clashing, either against each other, or against some poor bastard with insufficient protection, but those skirmishes never quite manage to be visible to you, and your portable ward continues to shine only faintly, rather than the emerald fire that would occur if they attempted to attack. Thankfully the Goldfire district is close enough to the Ruby palace that it's not a terribly long walk, and whatever luck has allowed you to remain unscathed doesn't run out before you arrive at the palace gatehouse. The red stone of the walls looks slate gray in this light, but up atop those ramparts shine hundreds, maybe thousands of glowing sparks, casting a gentle radiance over the street and outer walls, illuminating the expected palace guards and defensive machinery. At the gate itself, a double handful of guards stand watch inside a softly glowing ring of iron. They see you approaching, and come to attention, weapons not drawn but at the ready.
Palace Guard: "Hold and identify, wanderers."
Palace Guard: "I hope you have some business being here, because I don't really want to force you to walk home in this."
Vul remains a bit unhappy about all the anti-fey wards
Rai Patience Cantor: ((Yeah, they are in fact annoying. But, well, it's not like people really have much choice.))
Rai Patience Cantor: ((Since most people don't want to be shot full of arrows randomly.))
Rai Patience Cantor: "Rai Patience Cantor, and company, here by the Emir's invitation." She hands the guard the envelope of heavy, finely made paper, and he looks it over, nodding. "As the Emir is waiting for us, I hope you see fit to allow us in swiftly."
Palace Guard: "Ah. Your group. I heard about what you did. Good job, that. I sometimes see the old skywatcher coming in and out of the palace... I'd have felt bad if he'd died." He pauses, and you instantly find out that this guard doesn't have much of a poker face. There's clearly something bothering him about the situation.
Palace Guard: ((Dude did NOT roll high, lol.))
Palace Guard: ((You may speak if you wish, to avoid me just chattering to myself all night. ))
Lucky raises an eyebrow, "Something up?"
Palace Guard looks uncomfortable for a moment, and shares a quick glance with one of his fellows. "Well... look. Things have been a little weird lately, what with all of the foreign bigwigs here now, and the cult, and whatever is happening with Garmera, and... well, we're all a little off our game. People are acting nervous." He doesn't quite manage to meet your eyes. "Gol, you're with me. We'll show you inside..." He eyes Io, apparently just spotting him. "Is that your pet, or...?"
Vul: "Io here is a fairly singluar specimine of dragondom. Are shows of opulence not approprate?" Vul speaks up from behind
The guard he shared a glance with just prior nods. Apparently that's Gol, who walks around to the other side of the group as a couple of others open the gates; all spidery threads of gold in a startlingly complex woven pattern that is almost certainly enchanted to be far stronger than steel bars. The first guard seems to consider the statement. "A dragon, is it? Are you sure it's not a drake, or something like that? Because I don't know that I could get away with allowing an actual dragon into the palace." He gives Vul a glance that seems to have some weight behind it.
A few of the other guards are looking at each other now, uncertainty on their faces as they listen to their fellow speak to you in an oddly casual tone.
Vul looks to Io's opinion of the word, as he'd never just SAY Io's a drake
Vul: "Is there some reason? Io is quite young and there are quite a lot of you even in the rather insane idea we'd want to start trouble. Io IS dislike a normal dragon I suppose."
Io: "No, the guard is right. I'm only a drake." There are notes of both frustration and amusement in their voice. "Well. I had wanted to see the inside of the palace, but I suppose that's not going to happen now."
Riot: (( I'm here and paying attention, just also talking to my cousin who is having a crisis ))
Palace Guard: "Errr... guests, I'm afraid that my authority isn't sufficient to allow an exception of that nature, unfortunately. Even if you aren't dangerous, master Io, as a dragon you're an intelligent creature. And that means you'd need to be invited, and you haven't been. Unless your name is actually one of those on the invitation. I can't allow people onto the grounds uninvited."
Palace Guard: "I'd be an even poorer guard than I am if I simply let people inside because that's where they wanted to be."
Vul: -.-
Hector Achilon: ((Sorry, man. He gave an out, but you did just say "Hey, can I just bring my buddy into this private meeting with the president on the spur of the moment?" to the guy whose job it literally is to stop people from doing that. Maybe you could convince him, but you'd have to try. He's definitely not going to change his mind by himself at this point.))
Vul can't even go anyways, so
Riot: (( oh lol I totally forgot Vul wasn't invited ))
Vul was only coming along incase dragon or weapons were not allowed
Ra'ven: "So a drake would be alright as long as it couldn't talk? A druid could make a tree talk."
Hector Achilon: ((This guard isn't saying anything about your weapons, though a couple of the others have glanced at them a time or two. Unfortunately, it seems as though now that they know that he's not just a pet they aren't immediately willing to let him inside.))
Ra'ven: "Io is an important symbol of our organization's wealth and status as it is. What words they speak are but a show of how they are able to behave themselves unlike a normal drake which would slip compultions."
Palace Guard: "A druid could make a tree talk, but if I tried to hold a conversation with it, it would still be a tree. A dragon is a person, even if they look more like animals." He sighs. "This isn't the first dragon who has come to the palace, and all the others needed invitations too."
Palace Guard: "I could send a runner inside to ask permission, if you'd like. I don't know that the odds are good, though."
Ra'ven: "Permission from whom? We are to meet the Emir."
=^v^=: (( oh also out of character, I'm fine with Io staying outside... Vul woud just try to do Io a solid and Ra'ven would back him up in this particular conversation ))
Palace Guard: "The castellen, or whichever of her subordinates is on duty. She's the one who makes these decisions, not me."
Lucky: "Can't hurt to ask, I guess?"
Ra'ven: "I suppose.. We did save all those rich and important people in addition to the Dean of the Observatory, perhaps our requests might carry weight."
Ra'ven: "If it wouldn't cause us to be late."
Palace Guard: "Right! Okay, Gol, get yourself inside and ask about this." The man who'd taken up position behind your group walks back the way he came, then jogs off toward the palace, exchanging a quick glance with the first guard as he does so. "Well, it'll be a few minutes, I'm afraid, but you're right, you shouldn't be late. " He pauses. "...I think you have a better chance than you'd normally have, though. After all, we've had a lot of unusual guests here recently, not all of which we've been told about beforehand." That last is said perhaps a little too casually. "Don't worry, we'll get this sorted."
Kris: "Unusual guests?"
Ra'ven: "Likely related to those new guards we ran across at the docks." Ra'ven says with a 'you know' sorta glance
Vul:
  Cute Pink Flower Harpin
Yes I can hear your thoughts, no its not out of place!
Effect: He has telepathy 5, resist 5 poison and necrotic and +2 to saves vs poison and necrotic whilst wearing it.
Vul sorta thinks at the party, "sounds more trap-ish then before now, huh. Stay on your guard."
Palace Guard: "Oh yes. Usually foreigners aren't allowed free reign here, but its been made very clear that some of these guests outrank us, if you understand. Not all of them have senses of humor about being questioned."
=^v^=: (( the headband also has a strange tinge of excitement ))
Rai Patience Cantor thinks back. "A trap, yes... but there's something else going on too. This man is being too accomodating for someone in his position."
Kris: "I see."
Vul: "Perhaps it is that you are heroes and these new guards are suspicious interlopers triggering his finely honed palice guard sense..." foxthoughts drift a bit like a story
A few minutes later, Gol comes jogging back, and exchanges a few whispered sentences with his apparent superior. He turns toward you, a deeply affected smile now on his face. "Well, it seems that you're in luck. It seems like its acceptable, so long as you make certain not to damage anything. I guess he wants to meet you badly enough that this isn't a consequential change."
Vul nods and pats Io on the head
Palace Guard: "So lets go. Best not keep his excellency waiting."
both of those guards take up their positions again, the first in front of you, and the other behind. The first guard gestures for you to follow.
Vul lets the party go ahead as he walks out a ways before circling back to meet back up with team2
You've only walked perhaps forty or fifty feet inside the gate, when Gol pipes up from behind you. "I didn't really go and talk to the castellan, you know. I just waited inside for a few minutes, then came back out."
His voice is soft, barely penetrating the the silver silence.
Palace Guard looks over his shoulder, but simply nods and keeps walking.
Ra'ven looks less dour about the being questioned at that
Palace Guard: "It didn't seem like a good idea to get too talkative in front of the others. Gol and I are the only ones in the group that I know feel the way we do." He sighs. "Listen, I don't actually know what's going on, but I've been getting more and more nervous about those "guests." I think something really wrong is going on here... and I'm pretty sure that this is some kind of trap. You'll be meeting the Emir in the Onyx chamber, and none of us have been allowed inside there for the last three days. The only ones who go in and out are the ones I'm warning you about. Them and a lot of materials I didn't recognize."
Gol: "You did a good thing, and you don't deserve to be cut down for it. We probably can't help in too many other ways, but we thought you at least deserved to be warned."
Lucky visibly relaxes at the reassurance that the guard they're following isn't about to attack them
Kris: "We kind of figured some thing was up."
Palace Guard: "Well, pardon my question, but what the hell did you come here for, then? I know I wouldn't walk straight into a skyray's mouth if I had a choice."
Ra'ven: "To spring the trap. It will make the reasons for it obvious."
Palace Guard: "And you're concerned about reasons, are you?" He shakes his head. "Sorry, don't mean to be rude. I just didn't figure that you'd WANT to stick your nose into business like this."
Ra'ven: "It could be honest still. If not, those like yourself deserve to know what sort of thing is afoot."
Gol chuckles a bit from behind you. "You're very kind."
Sera: "It's not a choice I think any of us like having to have made, but it very much matters why ."
=^v^=: (( lol both Ra'ven and Vul are super into this sorta thing ))
Palace Guard: "True enough, though I'm not sure what you can do about it. I figured that we would just warn you, and then you'd come up with an excuse to run off. I didn't expect you to take up a crusade on our behalf." A short pause. "...Thank you. None of us can really look into it. We all have families or friends here in the city. I can't put them at risk by digging around where I'm not wanted. But if you aren't afraid of that, then you'd be doing us a genuine favor. And I think I should try to help how I can, if that's the case. So if you have questions, ask them quick. We have a few minutes of walking ahead, but that all."
Gol: "We've seen things, but we don't know what they mean. We don't know the right questions to ask."
Sera: "Does the name Jydith mean anything to you?"
Gol spits, coming dangerously close to catching Hector's heel. "That woman. She's been here for more than a month, and doesn't answer to anyone. She actually painted over one of the portraits in the gallery, and turned it into... I don't know. Some kind of weird landscape. And when Belmasse tried to stop her, she got both her arms broken for the trouble."
Ra'ven sighs, "So she's here too..."
=^v^=: (( I can't remember what sort of govermental name the devils have, iron... what?" ))
Riot: (( you mean Iron Empire? ))
Ra'ven: "She answers to the Iron throne, like the rest of her ilk..."
Gol: "Probably. She's not always here, but most of the time. Haven't seen her today, but she's fucking sneaky. Sometimes you walk around a corner, and she's just THERE, smiling and waiting with a knife in her hand. And then she puts it away, right after she knows you've seen it." He swears softly at Ra'ven's statement. "Dammit, you're serious, aren't you?"
Sera sneers, "I'm sure that sent a message. Stay away from her if you can, if you value you and your loved ones lives. And yes, she works for the Iron Empire."
Ra'ven: "Unfortuantly... Good you managed to avoid her ire." she sighs, "We... will likely attempt to flee if it comes to blows. Would this be a good way back out?"
Palace Guard: "I'd believe it. She scares the willies out of me. If I had to pick one person I've met to be part of something that twisted, it would be her." He looks back over his shoulder. "No, definitely not. There are eight of us stationed at the gate, and twelve more inside the gatehouse who'll come rushing as soon as anything starts. And we'd either have to fight you or explain why we didn't. Probably to her. No, if you can find another way out, I'd try that. Maybe over the wall? We've got stairways up on this side, and there aren't as many of us in any one place."
Palace Guard: "...Iron Empire. I didn't think things were that bad."
Gol: "I could open the spinward sally-port. It's a small door, but you're not an army or anything. If you rush it, you could probably get through there, and there are only two guards stationed on this side of it."
Gol: "I can manage to get it open without them taking too much notice, probably."
Lucky: "That sounds like a good plan, honestly. I'm sure we're gonna try and get through this without a fight, but based on who's involved, I don't have high hopes for it."
Rai Patience Cantor: "Indeed. I suspect we might even have one of those situations upon us where we know, and they know, and we know they know, and they know we know. If they live up to their reputation, there's no way they wouldn't consider that we might have noticed their collusion."
Rai Patience Cantor: "Which, of course, brings us right back around again to 'why.'" What is the purpose of inviting us here? She may not fear us, but would she really be reckless when she didn't have to be?"
Ra'ven: "Gloat"
Ra'ven: "You can't not gloat."
Rai Patience Cantor: "Perhaps. I admit that I can't think of another reason at this time."
Ra'ven: "With that level of 'knows we know they know' you can't know if they wil walk into it."
Sera: "She loves to show her leverage. But at the same time, the possibility exists the Emir brought us here to stop her, which... There's just no way."
Ra'ven: "She likely has a raid set up as well, I'd think."
Gol: "A raid?"
Ra'ven: "On our headquarters if we politely declined."
Ra'ven: "Perhaps even as we come here."
Ra'ven nods, "So, to be honest, it's perhaps fun to make her think we were too stupid to see this coming, might throw her off."
Gol: "Damn. You think they want you that bad? And, don't take this the wrong way, but I'm glad you came here then. If there was going to be a raid sent after you, I might have been ordered to be part of it, and I'd just as soon not have three feet of steel shoved up my ass by folks like you."
Ra'ven: "We personally sent her back to the Empire not to long ago. I assume she holds grudges."
Io: "I certainly would."
Sera: "She holds grudges, but she also has a twisted code of honor. If she makes a deal she will follow through."
You pass below a glazed archway leading into the palace, the doors to which stand wide open, with only a pair of statues to flank it. The lead guard turns back to you. "Almost there. We'll have to be careful when talking from here, if we can do it at all. I don't know about this code of honor she's supposed to have, but just be careful. It seems like you might actually be the good guys here, and you being punished for it is the last thing I want to see. Most of joined because we love this city. We joined because we thought we would be protecting it." His mouth firms into a line. "And some of us still feel that way. If it's really the Iron Empire here, then the only way to protect our home is to try to stop them, so if the only people who seem to know what's going on get killed it would be a real problem for us."
Palace Guard: ((Ok, I'm going to have to check out just a bit early. I am dying of exhaustion over here. Running on a little less than two hours of sleep at the moment. Rest has been difficult lately. -.- ))
Riot: (( no worries. That is not nearly enough sleep! I'd have died already ))
Palace Guard: Appreciated. My body just decided to tell me to go fuck off and die this past month and some.
Riot: (( Been there for sure ))
Palace Guard: I think it is getting better, if slowly, though.
Riot: (( Good, I hope so ))
Palace Guard: (Yup! Thanks guys. I'm still bad at estimating time, so I apologize for demonstrating that we actually DIDN'T need to skip last time. Sigh. Sorry. Good night, though, and be well, because y'all are awesome.)
